Darrell C. Sherard

Darrell Claude Sherard, 79, of Hurley passed away Monday, May 28, 2018 at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg. Funeral services will be 1:00pm Saturday, June 2 at Spring Valley Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Unzicker officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Valley Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7pm at the church with family present. Arrangements by Hofmeister Jones Funeral Home. Darrell was born at the home place Nov. 27, 1938 to Clyde and Ivy (Nielsen) Sherard. He married Verda Klinghagen Aug. 9, 1959. They had three children, Randall, Robb and Raye. Darrell lived at the home place for all but 14 years of his life. He ran the Spring Valley Dairy and his farm before he retired. He was a 1956 graduate of Hurley High School. He attended the University of South Dakota for one year and the Seminary for one year. He was active in the church through teaching Sunday School for 20 years, a member of the church board, a fill-in pastor at the nursing home and teaching children during Vacation Bible School. After he retired, Darrell spent his days polishing his cars and readying them for various car shows. He won many first place trophies for his cars. He also took pride in his farm and lawn and spent much of his time outdoors mowing or weeding. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Darrell is survived by his wife, Verda Sherard; three sons, Randall (Gina) Sherard of Turlock, CA and Robb (Danielle) Sherard and Raye (Joddie) Sherard, both of Hurley; a sister, Diann Nygaard of Fort Collins, CO; five grandchildren, Beth (Timothy) Fennel of Elk Point, SD, Aaron (Haylee) Sherard of Hurley, Ivy (special friend Anthony Jacobs) Sherard and Kinsey (Alex) Taggart, both of Sioux Falls, SD and Cayman Sherard of Hurley; a step-great-granddaughter, Felicity Fennel of Mitchell, SD; and a great-granddaughter, Hazel Sherard. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Duane “Dee” Sherard; a sister-in-law, Helen Sherard; and a brother-in-law, Lowell Nygaard.
