Carol Vandervelde, 85 of Goodyear, AZ, formerly of Hurley, passed away at the Abrazo West Campus Hospital on March 30, 2026. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, April 23, 2026 at Harmony Presbyterian Church, Hurley. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home.
Carol Millicent Sanborn Vandervelde passed away peacefully on March 30, 2026, in Goodyear, Arizona, with her son at her side. She was 85 years old.
Born on February 24, 1941, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Carol grew up in Hurley, South Dakota, where she graduated from Hurley High School. She went on to attend South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. After college she lived in Colorado, California, Texas before she returned to Hurley in the early 2000s and was known in her communities to be a frequent volunteer, faithful church attendee and an avid cook, seamstress, and yarn crafter. Her sense of humor, wit, and competitive nature in card games will be deeply missed.
Carol adored her family, and is survived by her son, Todd Vandervelde of Goodyear, Arizona; her daughter, Pegge Vandervelde of Brookings, South Dakota; three granddaughters, Jordan Cady and her husband Sam of Cary, North Carolina, Dana King and her husband Connor of Richmond, Virginia, and Casey Vandervelde of Harrisonburg, Virginia; and her great-granddaughter, Piper King of Richmond, Virginia.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Almeda Sanborn of Hurley, South Dakota, and her brother, Charles G. Sanborn of Syracuse, Utah.
She was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by her family and all whose lives she touched.
