“I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love,”
“If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles.”
-Walt Whitman
Gaylord Fred Hansen, born June 9, 1942, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 28th, at Sanford Hospice Cottage, surrounded by his family.
Gaylord was born at the Mitchell hospital to Clifford and Elliner Hansen. His early childhood began on the family farm near Kimball, SD after which the family moved to the farm that would remain central to his life. Working alongside his father, Gaylord developed a deep appreciation for the land, a strong work ethic, and a lifelong love of caring for animals — qualities that shaped him from boyhood through his final years.
He graduated from Parker High School in 1960 and later in life continued his education at Dakota State University, where he earned his degree in Business Administration and Computer Science. Gaylord built a meaningful and varied career. Early in his career, he worked at KSOO Television, farmed for over 30 years, was a dedicated Farm Bureau member, and proudly served in the South Dakota National Guard, reflecting his commitment to both community and country.
On February 6, 1971, Gaylord married Sharon Johnson, beginning a loving partnership. Together they raised two sons, Gaylen (Kelle) Hansen of Sioux Falls and Paul (Patty) Hansen of Hartford. Gaylord was deeply proud of his family and found great joy in watching his grandchildren grow: Miah (Nathan) Moon, Chloe Hansen, Collin Hansen, and Elizabeth Hansen. He is also survived by his brother‑in‑law Edwin (Rose) Johnson and their family.
Gaylord will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his steady presence, and his devotion to the simple, meaningful rhythms of farm life. He had a natural way with animals and a quiet strength that made him a source of comfort and reliability to those who knew him. His life was marked by humility, kindness, and a deep sense of responsibility — qualities that left a lasting impression on family, friends, and neighbors alike.
A private family service will be held in his honor. Cards and condolences may be sent to Sharon Hansen, 26716 459th Ave, Hartford, SD 57033.
The family extends a heartfelt thank‑you to the staff of Sanford Hospice Cottage for the exceptional care, comfort, and compassion they provided during Gaylord’s final days.
