I was born Jacobus Petrus DenDubbelden in my parent’s - Nick and Barbara Dubbelde’s home on June 12th, 1948 in Alkmaar, Netherlands. I am the fifth child out of seven children. We sailed for the United States on the Big Bear cargo ship in 1956. We sailed by the Statue of Liberty which was closed for repairs.

We joined family in the Larchwood Iowa area. We later moved to the Centerville, SD area where I attended grade school. We later moved to our permanent home NE of Parker where we milked cows and farmed the 80 acres and grew up. I attended Rose Cottage School. I attended Chancellor High School. My first paying job was working at the Bones Hereford Ranch tending cows. In my younger days I loved cars - sporty and fast! I bought a 1968 Roadrunner. Then I bought a 1972 Plymouth Satellite Sebring while I was dating Faye. My sister Barb went to PHS and one of her friends was Faye Heeren. I met Faye at Barb’s graduation at the house and our story began. On November 3rd, 1971 I became a citizen of the United States of America. At that time I began working for Pfeifer Implement in Sioux Falls as a mechanic and thus began my love affair with tractors. Date night for Faye and I was usually a movie and a drive thru burger at The Barrell or A&W drive inn. In the winter dates sometimes consisted of cutting up a deer in a garage with the brothers, making chislic and playing cards and still making a midnight curfew with Faye. We missed curfew one night and Sophia met us at the door!! We were married at the Germantown Presbyterian Church June 9th, 1973 a month after she graduated from USD/S. It was the hottest day of the year when AC wasn’t even a thought yet. I became a member of Germantown church soon after. Our first home was South on the intersection of Hwys 16 & Hwy17.

On December 27th, 1975 Jason Allen was born at Sanford. We were so happy. October 1976 we moved to our home by Chancellor. Sara Jane joined us March 29, 1978; Luvern Nick was born July 21,1982 and Brian Michael was born June 3rd, 1984. Our family was complete!

I raised hogs and sheep for a while and we had chickens along with a big vegetable garden. I drove a semi for Golden Sun Feed for over twenty years delivering feed throughout SD. I then went to Mid States Transport by Tea SD and hauled pre-cast out of Gage Brothers for about 15+ years in the Midwest. Faye and the kids held down the fort until I would make it home.

I retired from Midstates in 2014. I then began with Jonah farms as a seasonal farmhand. I also worked for the Turner County fair for two years as a maintenance person. I spent two winters driving for DOT.

In June of 2023 we celebrated 50 years of being married. A great evening hosted by our 4 kids and families.

Seven years and one day prior to my passing I had my motorcycle accident. I had many leisurely rides on that beautiful Harley. I healed well from that ride. These seven years were “bonus years.”

Being a dad, grandpa and great grandpa brought me so much happiness. I could be in trouble with the grands and nobody would scold me for it. I will miss them all so much but I will remain in their hearts.

I so enjoyed helping anyone with a project - especially outside things. I walked many miles putting up and checking fences before we moved Jason’s cows. I evidently chased cows in the pasture and mostly drove on two wheels the kids are saying. One summer we sat on their back patio watching the world drive by. Spent many hours under a vehicle or under the hood in Jason’s shop. Faye was amazed I could come home so dirty!!

At Brian’s I would help anyway I could. We tinned his big barn on New Year’s Day a couple years ago. They made me stay out of the bucket though…and on the ground. I think I might have been around with shearing sheep one time. We worked together to help build up his farm place. Loved looking at his new semi a few weeks ago. I just helped the boys unload a feed bag this morning (Thursday). I smiled and said when we were done, “Well, I’m off to my second job”. The four kids are big into 4-H and horses, so we enjoyed many events with them including the Turner County Fair.

A few years back Ryan and Sara brought her Harley to the farm so she could ride out here. Her and I rode alone one afternoon - it was great. I think she was smiling the whole time. The next day everyone with a bike rode - Faye watched us leave and just prayed….I never made the Sturgis ride though. We watched the Pierre grands play hockey over the years and swam in that great backyard pool and had many laughs as we ate some of Ryan’s awesome grilling.

We always enjoyed horse events and watching Vern and Cassie do team penning, cattle sorting and whatever else was happening. Ate some great meals off their Blackstone griddle while enjoying their yard. Harper told me once a few years ago with a poker face that “John Deere’s are junk Grandpa Jack!. It was hilarious. We also watched some softball games for the grands in the softball park.

Faye and I had many side by side rides - everywhere we could; just watching crops grow, finding asparagus and going to the 80 and the 40. That was a dream come true for me; having some black dirt to call my own.

I am survived by my wife, Faye, of 52 years, and my children Jason (Kristen) Dubbelde, Sara (Ryan) Bales, Luvern (Cassie) Dubbelde and Brian (Danielle). Dubbelde.

As well as my grand and great grandkids: Taylor (John) Oldenkamp, Hudson and Marlow. Tess and Nate VanMaanen. Tucker (Danica) Berens, Connor, Sophia and Lexi Bales. Sydney, Colt, Adley and Harper Jo. Paxton, Heston, Colston and Huckston Dubbelde, and Evan Dubbelde.

Brothers: Ted and Jeanie Dubbelde, Pete and Dawn Dubbelde, John and Linda Dubbelde. Sisters: Barb and Charles Jongeling and Joann and John Fleming.

Brother-in-laws Don and Carol Heeren and Gene and Linda Heeren. As well as many nieces, nephews and friends and good neighbors.

Faye said she’s always “waiting on me,” Well, now I’ll be waiting on her.

Please know that I trusted God as my personal Saviour and my hope for all of you is that you know Him personally as well. Jeremiah 29:11 and John 3:16.
