Jim Sweeney, 86 of Monroe, passed away on August 22, 2026 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, August 28, 2026 at St. Christina’s Catholic Church, Parker. Visitation will begin 1 hour prior. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home.
James Henry Sweeney, was born on March 26, 1940 in Ramona, SD, to Henry and Regina (Carmody) Sweeney.
As a child, the family moved to Sioux Falls and he graduated from Cathedral High School in 1958. He then joined the Navy, which gave him enough experiences to tell lots of stories.
In 1962, he married Patricia Talbert and had three children; Jimi, Lisa and Danielle.
Dad liked to work. He retired from Morrell's where he was a union steward, Novak Sanitary Service and was employed by Enterprise Rent-A-Car until recently.
He was fond of old westerns, instrumental music, going out to eat, calling everyone George and chocolate. He was a huge baseball fan, especially the Minnesota Twins, and followed NASCAR and racing for many years, even briefly racing himself. He was always welcoming to all, and generous to a fault. He loved his church and especially loved his family. We loved him right back.
Grateful for having shared his life are: brother Joe (Juanita) and sister Donna (Dave), son Jimi, daughters Lisa (Dave) and Danielle (Josh), grandchildren Brandi, Riley, Brianna, and Ciara, great-grand children Albert, Sophie, Regina and Ben, many nieces, nephews and cousins, extended family, co-workers and friends.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; Henry and Regina, brother P.V. and great-grandson, James,
