Marianne Smith

Marianne Smith, 95 of Marion, passed away on July 26, 2026 at the Tieszen Memorial Home, Marion. Memorial Services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 8, 2026 at the Emmanual Presbyterian Church, Marion. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Friday, August 7, 2026 at the church with a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 PM. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home.

Marianne was born on her family’s farm in Dolton to Herman and Eva Mae Decker on November 23, 1930. She joined her brother Duane “Dewey” and sister Betty. Later came her younger brother Alan “Buzzy” and sister Judy.

She graduated from Marion High School in 1948. After graduation, she moved to Sioux Falls to work at the Bell Telephone Company before returning to Marion where she was employed by the Turner-Hutchinson Electric Cooperative.

While working there, she met and married the love of her life, Keith Wayne Smith, in March 1952. She then dedicated herself to the role of a stay-at-home mother for six years raising her five children. Later, she was employed at Farmers State Bank before leaving to care for Keith when he became ill. Over the years, she also worked part-time at the Tieszen Memorial Home and Deb's Gas Station.

Marianne lived a life of faith and was an active member of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Marion, serving in many positions within the church. She also spent years participating in the planning and organizing of Marion’s All-School Reunion Programs.

An adventurer at heart, Marianne enjoyed traveling, camping and touring, gardening, sewing, painting, and reading. She also loved dancing, playing bingo, and trying her luck at gambling games.

Marianne is survived by her children Randy (Deb) Smith and Laurel Lammers; grandchildren Lacey (Mark) Branham, Jordan (Josh) Schmidt, Daniel (Michelle) Smith, Sarah (Eian) Mandler, Jonathan Mandler, Chad and Cody Roesler, Libby (Ken) Jones, Emily (Stephen) Lammers; great-grandchildren Ella, Chris, and Michael Branham, Hailey (Dominic) Stahl and Jerilee Schmidt, Brayden, Scarlett, and Harley Smith, Tobias and Maverick Jones; sisters Betty White-Painter and Judy Jones; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marianne was preceded in death by her parents; husband Keith; children Jon, Corine, and Carol; and her brothers Duane and Alan.
