Martin “Marty” Ludwig, age 71, passed away on July 12, 2026, at Intermountain Medical Center, after a prolonged and courageous battle with heart disease.
He was born on September 28, 1954, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Gordon, and Dolores (Hansen) Ludwig.
Marty was born and raised in southeastern South Dakota. He was the sixth of twelve children. Farm life instilled in him a lifelong love of the outdoors. When he wasn't helping with chores, he could often be found fishing, hunting, or trapping, depending on the season. Of all his outdoor pursuits, fishing held a special place in his heart.
Marty attended Hurley High School, where he was a member of the wrestling team. He graduated with the Class of 1972.
Following graduation, Marty proudly served in the United States Army from 1972-1974. He was honorably discharged after completing his service to his country.
Throughout his life, Marty worked in several trades before becoming a master plumber and eventually owning and operating his own plumbing business, Ludwig’s Plumbing and Heating. He was known for his exceptional craftsmanship, and determination.
Marty married in 1988, and from that marriage welcomed his one and only son, Tyler, who became the greatest joy of his life.
Marty passed on his passion for the outdoors to Tyler from a very young age. Together they shared countless days on the water, creating memories that would last a lifetime. As Tyler grew older, the two also enjoyed many pheasant hunting trips alongside Marty's beloved German Shorthaired Pointer, Hunter.
Beyond the outdoors, Marty possessed remarkable mechanical talent. Those skills made him one of the best motocross dads around, always ensuring Tyler's bikes were race-ready. His patience, ingenuity, and willingness to help others became hallmarks of the man he was.
Marty will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, and his love of family. Above all, he will be remembered as a devoted father whose greatest legacy lives on in the values, memories, and love he shared with his son.
Survivors are his son Tyler (Anna and Jay) Casper, WY; Siblings: Linda (Buck) Sampson of Viborg, SD; Betty (Merlin) Sampson of Irene, SD; Rita (Emery) Chamberlain of Broken Arrow, OK, Wayne of Milton, FL; Bev (Chuck) Lee of Bentonville, AR; Theresa (Keith) Bendert of Tyndall, SD; Edie Miller of Grapevine, TX; Tony (Penny) Ludwig of Tea, SD; Julie (Jody) Justus of Viborg, SD and Lori (Louie) Anderson of Viborg, SD.
