Shirley Sorensen Schallenkamp, 93 of Hurley, passed away on May 22, 2025 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg. A funeral Serviec will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, May 31, 2025 at Bethany Lutheran Church, Hurley. Visistation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Friday, May 30, 2025 at the church with a Time of Sharing beginning at 6:00 PM. IIn lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Shriners Children’s Ohio https://www.shrinerschildrens.org/en/locations/ohio , which provided life-changing care for Shirley’s son Jay after he was severely burned at age nine, enabling him to live a full life. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home.

Shirley Ann (Mahoney) Sorensen Schallenkamp, born October 1, 1931, to Herbert W. and Gertrude (Weier) Mahoney, passed away peacefully on May 22nd, 2025. Born at her grandparents’ home near Hurley, SD, she graduated from Hurley High School in 1949.

Shirley married Ray L. Sorensen on June 1, 1949, and they farmed northwest of Hurley, raising five sons: Larry, Dale, Randy, Jay, and Steve. Ray died suddenly in 1979. Shirley later married Thomas Rayman in 1980, living in Sioux Falls and operating an insurance agency until their divorce in 1993. In 1998, she married Ernest A. Schallenkamp, residing in Salem until his passing in 2017.

A talented dancer, Shirley met Ray at a dance, and dancing remained a lifelong passion. She worked as a bookkeeper at Hurley Elevator, a secretary for attorney Riley W. Connelly, and did drafting for local contractors. Shirley was choir director at her church, a licensed insurance agent, and an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, and Daughters of the Nile, serving as Queen in 1986. She loved playing bridge, singing with the Sioux Falls Sweet Adelines, traveling, playing piano, and oil painting.

Shirley is survived by her sons Randy (Ruth) Sorensen of Carmel, IN, and Steven (Tina) Sorensen of Frankfort, IL; grandchildren Justin and Jason Sorensen; Lisa Friese, Jennifer (Josh) Ross, Megan (Tom) Galvan, Natalie (Phillip) Brunner, Rachel, Carly, Echo, and Olivia Sorensen; great-grandchildren Kate, Luke, Will Friese, Jackson Sorensen, Gavin and Lydia Ross, Brooks and Maddie Galvan, Molly and Allison Brunner; step-great-grandchildren Alex, Andrew, Adynn, and Alicia; stepsons Kenneth (Kay) and David (Veronica) Schallenkamp; stepdaughters Carolyn, Blas, Janet (Alan) Karel, and Linda (Tim) Gross; eight step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, husbands Ray Sorensen, Thomas Rayman, and Ernest Schallenkamp, sons Larry (Bonnie), Dale (Connie), and Jay (Denise) Sorensen, sister Peggy Koller and brother-in-law Robert Koller, granddaughter Shawna Sorensen, and great-grandson Daxter Ross.
